Mathare Member of Parliament
(MP) Steve Kariuki is on the spot after his bodyguards allegedly shot and killed
a three-year old boy during a campaign rally at Kiamaiko Ward on Saturday.
The victim,Mohamed Ache,
succumbed to his injuries after a bullet penetrated the right side of his
chest.
He was rushed to the nearest
hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Nairobi Police boss Japheth
Koome confirmed the incident, saying they had launched investigations.
"It has been claimed it
was accidental but others think otherwise," Koome stated.
According to witness
accounts, one of the bodyguards, referred to as Oti brandished a gun to scare
away youth who had mobbed the MP during his campaign tour.
"I do not know what
exactly happened when he (the bodyguard) bent, but as he rose, one of the youth
held back his arm and the gun went off hitting the boy," a witness
identified as Wario Ali Jarso narrated.
Mr Jarso claimed the
bodyguard had two guns with him. According to a police source, one of the guns
was later identified as MP Kariuki's at Pangani Police Station later that
night.
Jarso further alleged that a
youth was assaulted by some of the bodyguards as he struggled to get to the MP.
Other officers who had AK-47 rifles started shooting in the air to disperse the
crowd.
Kariuki is defending his
seat on Jubilee Party ticket.
