The Anglican Church of Kenya is now backing the National
Super Alliance in calling for the exit of IEBC officials who bungled the August
8 General Election. NASA has been calling for the exit of Independent Electoral
and Boundaries Commission CEO Ezra Chiloba, claiming that he was used to
manipulate the election in favour of President Uhuru Kenyatta. The opposition
brigade does not want Chiloba to oversee the October 26 repeat presidential
election after the Supreme Court nullified President Uhuru Kenyatta’s victory.
Speaking on Wednesday, September 27, 35 ACK bishops made
their stance on the IEBC matter known during a press conference at the All
Saints’ Cathedral in Nairobi. “The IEBC must exclude staff who bungled the
election. In order to avoid the possibility of another bungled election, IEBC
must do everything within its power to cleanse itself and take corrective
action, including exclusion of those who failed in their duties during the last
election,” said Archbishop Daniel ole Sapit on behalf of the church.
The church leaders further called on the polling body to
regain public confidence by becoming transparent. On Wednesday, September 27,
NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga announced that the opposition brigade
will lead supporters in anti-IEBC demonstrations every Mondays and Fridays to
demand the ousting of Chiloba and other IEBC officials. According to prior
TUKO.co.ke, Chiloba said he will not resign, saying he has been given a
responsibility to oversee the repeat election and he will see to it.
“Today it is me, tomorrow it is someone else because of the
short term gains we are trying to pursue. The country needs to calm down and
see what we can do to ensure that we meet the standards set out by the Supreme
Court in the fresh election," said Chiloba in a previous interview.
