The United State on Tuesday sent a cautionary advice to Kenya after the inauguration of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.
While congratulating the two, the US through Department of State Spokesperson Heather Nauert warned the police against using unnecessary force against Kenyans of opposing opinions.
This was in light of the National Super Alliance (NASA) street protests staged against President Kenyatta and his administration. The Opposition has maintained that Kenyatta is an illegitimate President.

“We are deeply concerned by the ongoing political tensions in Kenya. We urge security forces to refrain from the use of unnecessary force against citizens exercising their democratic rights," the statement reads.
The US urged Kenya to hold talks in order to heal division between communities that has been caused by the protracted and controversial elections.
“As part of the process of addressing these tensions and strengthening institutions, we urge Kenyans to join together to hold an immediate, sustained, and open national conversation to heal divisions between communities. We encourage all Kenyans to come together at this critical moment and to work together peacefully and uphold the constitution,” the statement read in part.
At the same time, the Donald Trump-led administration assured Mr. Kenyatta that US would continue working together with Kenya.

"The United States congratulates the people of Kenya on the conclusion of the presidential election process, as well as President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto on their inauguration for a second term.
"The United States and Kenya have been steadfast partners for decades, working together to strengthen security, build mutual prosperity, address regional challenges, and to advance development and good governance," the US said.
