Police on Friday issued an alert for an armed gang that hijacked and made away with a car belonging to an elderly couple during the funeral service held for veteran politician Kenneth Matiba.
The couple was attacked during the service that was held at Ihura Stadium, Murang'a County on Thursday and was attended by among other dignitaries, President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP William Ruto.
The vehicle had been parked near the Murang'a District Hospital and the gang is said to have attacked at around 4:30 pm.
They further narrated that they shouted for help as their attackers forced them out of the car but no one came to help.
Before they received help, the assailants had already sped away with the vehicle and the couple recorded a statement at the Murang'a Police Station.
Those who happened to witness the ordeal told reporters that the gang followed the couple to the car and only noticed all was not well when one of the gang members struck the gentleman.
"We wanted to know the reason they were screaming and before we understood what had happened it was too late.
"We had suspected that the couple that had differed with their children as they walked towards the vehicle," a witness narrated.
Murang’a East OCPD Ms Janet Wasige confirmed the report adding that the vehicle was yet to be recovered.
She urged members of the public to be on the lookout for the stolen vehicle and assured that details of the car would be circulated countrywide.
