[VIDEO] Kisumu Protesters Burn Uhuru Banners, Say President Disturbing Their Peace

Kisumu residents on Wednesday burned banners congratulating President Uhuru Kenyatta's on his win at the August 8 poll.

These were to be erected near Jubilee market along Kisumu-Nairobi road.

Two workers who were putting up the banners were forced to take refuge at the top of the structure until police came to their rescue.

Police lobbed teargas canisters at the protesters to disperse them.

The residents chanted anti-Uhuru slogans saying they will not allow such banners in the county led by former Senator Anyang' Nyong'o.

They shouted 'Hatutaki madharau! Hatutaki madharau' (We don't want contempt).

Mark Ochieng noted the presidential election results dispute is being handled by the Supreme Court.
He said it beats logic to put up such banners before the case is determined.

"We are still mourning. Uhuru should give us a break. Let him not disturb our peace," he said.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga commands a huge following in the region and Kisumu is his home turf.

The NASA leader has sued IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati and Uhuru over the results declared on August 11.

Earlier today, the Supreme Court noted the matter is now in its hands and warned the public and interested parties against doing anything that could negatively affect the process.

After Chebukati declared Uhuru president, residents of parts of Kisumu, Homa Bay and Nairobi took to the streets, protests which left several dead and many injured.

Nyong'o said six people were sexually assaulted and 171 others tortured.

He said he will work with human right defenders to ensure the victims get justice.
