Heavily armed police officers have sealed off Uhuru Park as the opposition NASA prepares to hold protests geared at ejecting IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba and other commissioners from office.
Bungoma Senator and NASA co-principal Moses Wetangula on Monday evening said they are prepared to lead opposition followers in protests that will climax outside Anniversary Towers along University Way, the seat of the IEBC.
Officers drawn from the dreaded General Service Unit, regular as well as the Administration Police were deployed at the city centre as early as 5am in readiness for any acts of violence.
Other security officers and police water cannons are stationed outside Anniversary Towers.
Nairobi Police commander Japhet Koome said Monday NASA had not formally notified police of plans to demonstrate.
If the protest is deemed illegal, there could be an ugly confrontation between the protesters and the police. Jubilee supporters also plan counter demos.
Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi said in an interview the focus of the demonstrations will be in Nairobi although they will also be held in the country’s key town of Mombasa and Kisumu.
NASA leader Raila Odinga declared on Sunday that he will lead opposition supporters in protesting Chiloba’s continued stay in office after being adversely mentioned among officials who bungled the August 8 general election.
“As NASA Coalition we have given fair notice to the IEBC that Kenyans have had enough and are coming for them this coming Tuesday 26th September. Enough is enough and IEBC as is currently constituted, simply must go to make way for meaningful reforms.”
