CJ Maraga Reveals What They Were Forced To Do Before Supreme Court Ruling

Supreme Court Judges

CJ David Maraga has disclosed that they were forced to consolidate the two petitions filed challenging President Uhuru Kenyatta's win due to time constraints.

Maraga, while reading the ruling on Monday morning, stated that they were not able to write a full judgement but a summary verdict.
"What we read today is a summary verdict on the issues raised in the petitions. Because of time pressure, the two presidential election petitions were consolidated and heard together.
"After hearing the petitions we retired with only two days left to the deadline and it was impossible to write a full judgement. What we read today is a summary verdict on the issues raised in the petitions," Maraga said.
In the ruling delivered by supreme court, they unanimously dismissed the 2 petitions challenging Kenyatta's win.
Maraga argued that the petition lacked merit adding that the judges agreed Kenyatta was validly elected.
Two separate petitions had been brought before the apex court seeking to annul Kenyatta's victory.
Former Kilome MP Harun Mwau, activist Activist Njonjo Mue and a voter Khelef Khalifa had asked the court to nullify Kenyatta's win on grounds that there was low voter turnout and violence in some areas that saw the election not conducted.
The petitioners argued that failure by the IEBC to carry out election in the 25 constituencies was unconstitutional.
