A group of five NASA supporters were on Tuesday arrested
after they attempted to break Embakasi MP Babu Owino out of jail.
The five had strategically positioned themselves at the exit
of the Milimani Law Courts.
As Owino was led out of the court room, the five men were
assisted by a crowd of youths and managed to overpower the security officers
and successfully freed the MP.
However, the former student leader’s freedom was short lived
as the marshals were able to get reinforcement and successfully recaptured him
before he was led out through an alternative exit route normally used by the
judges.
Five of those who had engaged in the melee were arrested and
held at the Milimani Law Court cells.
Owino is facing charges of subversion by allegedly creating
disaffection against the presidency.
If found guilty, the newly elected MP could be sentenced
for up to seven years in jail.
