The University of Nairobi (UoN) was closed on Tuesday
morning 3 October with immediate effect due to the deteriorating security
situation in the university, according to the institution’s Vice Chancellor
Peter Mbithi.
The institution’s Director of Corporate Affairs, John
Orindi, said that the students had been given until 9.00 am to leave the
university premises.
This follows after the students protested over the arrest of
former student President Babu Owino after his remarks against the presidency.
The university students also demanded that the institution’s
Vice Chancellor Peter Mbithi get fired alleging that he allowed the police
officers into the varsity premises.
The police officers have been criticized by Kenyans after
leaked photos and videos of them brutally beating the students went viral on
social media.
