Since the ‘Kazi Kwa Vijana’ (Work for Youth) programme was
launched in 2009, Kenyan youths continue to be adversely affected by
unemployment.
The noble initiative was intended to give first priority to
youths but the situation on the ground is much worse. This is best illustrated
by the appointment of a 65-year-old to represent youths in the Nyeri
cabinet.
Despite opposition from younger members of the Nyeri County
Assembly, Sheila Githaiga has been nominated as CEC for Youths, Sports and
Social Services. Her nomination was approved by the MCAs during a special
sitting yesterday.
Among those who opposed Githaiga’s appointment
was Konyu MCA Eric Mwangi who argued that a more youthful person would be
better suited for the job.
But Chinga MCA Kiruga Thuku argued that many leaders,
including former President Mwai Kibaki, former South African President Nelson
Mandela, and US President Donald Trump ascended to power while over 60 years of
age.
He said that Githaiga should be given a chance.
Gakawa MCA Amos Kanyai said Githaiga has a lot of exposure
and will bring change to the county.
Mwigoyo MCA Michael Karumba said the cabinet should have
young and old people as the mixture “can be a wonderful combination”.
