Why 20 Nakuru Residents Killed Themselves

Suicide

In August 2017 alone, 20 people are reported to have committed suicide in the Molo and Kuresoi Constituencies  in Nakuru County.

Most of the victims were young (between the ages of 25 and 35 years) and they ended their lives through hanging, taking poison and jumping into manholes and dams.

The worrying case of suicides in the county is attributed to lack of job prospects, drug abuse and financial problems. This is according to Doctor Florence Wairimu of St. Joseph’s Nursery and Maternity Home in Molo who believes that these 3 factors that have driven many to kill themselves
“Most of these issues are those that can be talked about and solved with or without the presence of a third party.” She told The Nation.

This revelation comes a few months after Peter Solomon Gichira an independent presidential candidate tried to commit suicide by jumping off a window at the IEBC offices after his presidential bid was turned down by the commission.

Given that suicide is a crime in Kenya he spent two nights in jail was charged with attempted suicide, malicious damage to property and creating a disturbance and paid a fine of 200,000 Kshs.
