NASA leader Raila Odinga’s daughter, Winnie, has recounted the horrific experience that saw his father almost shot at.
On Friday, Odinga escaped death by a whisker when he landed in Kenya from his trip abroad.
What was meant to be a grand reception, where his supporters were to escort him to Uhuru Park from the Jomo Kenyatta Airport (JKIA), turned into a chaotic scene as police blocked the procession along Jogoo road.
Mr. Odinga came face to face with death when his white range rover was shot at, damaging the windscreen.
However, the bullet did not go through as the vehicle was bulletproof. The former Prime Minister was accompanied by his two children Raila junior and Winnie.
Recounting the events of the dreadful day, Winnie divulged that she could not believe that the police officers were actually attacking his father's car, targeting it with teargas canisters and later shooting straight at the windcreen.
"It came out of the blue, this huge blast of a tear gas canister hitting the car from one of those weaponised throwers you have seen in videos.
"That was immediately followed by other hand thrown canisters and at least half a dozen gunshots that hit the car all around us, of the kind you associate with AK47s.
"I just could not believe that the former PM's car was actually coming under fire in broad daylight with scores of witnesses looking on,” Winnie was quoted by Odinga’s advisor Salim Lone as saying.
Winnie disclosed that two bullets also hit the side she seated.
"The most frightening moment was when a bullet hit the windscreen and shattered it. Had it not been a bulletproof car, that bullet would have hit Mzee. Two bullets also hit the car on the side I was sitting,” she said.
