An employee of the
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) reportedly killed
himself just hours after overseeing voting in the just concluded elections.
We have established that Orenge Nyabicha was a presiding officer
at the Imara Daima Polling centre in Nairobi’s Embakasi area.
A report by the Standard says he used to work with the Standard Group where he
was a sub-editor.
On the fateful day, Nyabicha
is said to have arrived home when his family noticed he looked disturbed after
successfully overseeing the exercise.
An identified family member said the IEBC official retired to
bed but was found dead inside the house in the morning.
Reports have it he had lit a charcoal jiko and sealed all
ventilation in his Pipeline estate home. He is believed to have suffered carbon
monoxide poisoning.
Authorities who arrived at the scene to pick his body found a
suicide note which according to the Standard, indicated he was frustrated by
his employer’s inability to deliver free and credible polls.
The note also said he wanted to go to heaven to be with God and
great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi.
This past Friday, On August the 11th, the electoral body
declared President Uhuru Kenyatta the victor of the August 8 elections after
defeating his closest competitor Raila Odinga.
The Opposition has since rejected the results saying the poll
was sham.
