Kenya as a nation is still mourning the death of young
ambitious future leaders who died in the Moi Gilrs High School Nairobi fire
inferno.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday morning at 2 am, left
seven dead and many nursing injuries. The fire razed one of the dormitories
that houses form 1 students.
Sadly Mary Jengo, who was the heroine who risked it all to
save her schoolmates lives’ is dead. The young girl was badly burnt while
saving her fellow students and she succumbed to injuries that fateful day,
while undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Many including her mother Mrs
Florence Agoto described her as an extraordinary child.
“She Is A Merciful And
Kind Child And Since The Parents Of The Children She Saved Are Also Praying For
Her, I Am Hopeful She Shall Be Well,” She Told Journalists On Sunday At A
Hospital Where Her Mary Was Fighting For Her Life In The Icu.
The heroine’s death came as a major blow to her family and
the entire Moi Girls fraternity. According to her aunt Ms Ann Emali, she was a
bright and happy girl.
“SHE WAS BUSY WAKING
UP THE REST OF HER COLLEAGUES AFTER THE FIRE BROKE. BUT ON LEAVING THE
DORMITORY, THE FIRE HAD ALREADY SPREAD EVERYWHERE AND SHE HAD NO OTHER OPTION
BUT PASS THROUGH IT TO SAVE HER LIFE. SHE WAS BADLY BURNT AND WAS RUSHED TO THE
HOSPITAL WHERE SHE SUCCUMBED TO INJURIES.”
Adding;
“SHE USED TO TELL ME
THAT SHE WOULD WORK HARD IN SCHOOL. ENGLISH AND CRE WERE HER BEST SUBJECTS,”
REMINISCES MS EMALI.
The number of girls killed in the fire now stands at nine.
According to Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, the fire was an arson
attack, and not an accident. Five girls are currently being interrogated for
their possible involvement.
Her courageous act has left Kenyans praising her and
here is what some of them had to say
Dolvin: Rest in peace Mary this is so sad
Joy: She died as a hero, may her soul rest in peace
Josephine: RIP Mary, may the Almighty give the family
and friends strength to hold on, an angel in death.
Greg: May she rest in peace, her act of self-giving
will be remembered
Grace: RIP girl…may God comfort the family
Njoroge: She accomplished more in her short life than
most that have lived and ever will. Sleep well among the angels and saints
Sonnie: Dance with the angels
