The government has switched back on NTV and KTN News after
activist Okiya Omtatah filed proceedings for contempt of court.
Citizen TV and Inooro TV are yet to be reinstated, the
shut down lasted for seven days. The government made the move to switch off the
TV stations citing security reasons during the controversial swearing in of
Raila Odinga as the people’s president.
Activist Okiya Omtata had petitioned the court to order the
communication authority to switch on the signals for these stations saying that
switching them off was in contravention of article 34 of freedom of the media
and article 35 on the right to information.
Two editors and a reporter at NTV were also on the verge of
being arrested following the airing of the scenes from Uhuru Park on that day.
They managed to get anticipatory bail pending arrest and they were ordered to
report to the DCI headquarters in Kiambu.
