
Machakos County Governor Alfred Mutua has declared that Mombasa Road is now closed.
Through a statement on his social media, The Governor stated that due to the rains on Thursday has rendered many places inaccessible.
He added that the road was closed because Athi River at Mto ya Mawe had broken its banks and flooded over Mombasa Highway.
"As it is right now, the water is rising. Our emergency assessment is that the highway will be cut off until tomorrow," he stated.
"We urge those travelling towards Machakos and Mombasa to either postpone their trips or to use Kangundo road - Koma road to Machakos - then Konza road to Malili or Machakos road to Kyumvi," he advised.
Machakos County Emergency Services have rescued over 50 people (mostly the elderly, house helps and children) from some of the submerged houses of Green Park Estate. Our teams will be on ground overnight and are responding county wide to flooding. Mombasa Highway is CLOSED," Mutua tweeted.
Nairobi on Thursday was brought to a near standstill after torrential rains pounded the city.
The floods led to major traffic snarl ups on major roads leading into and out of the city.
