The political relationship between NASA Leader Raila Odinga and KANU Chairman Gideon Moi has gone a notch higher after the ODM Party officially announced its support for the bill meant to create position of Prime Minister.
The idea of amending the constitution was stated by Gideon’s ally, who is also the Tiaty MP, William Kamket.
Yesterday, ODM Chairman John Mbadi announced that the Odinga-led party would support the constitutional amendments meant to change Kenya’s operation of government from a presidential system to a parliamentary democracy.
Mbadi, however, stated that ODM would seek a few adjustments in Kamket’s proposal, hoping to make sure that the Presidency is not a purely ceremonial position.
“We want it harmonised in such a way that the President is not only ceremonial but also retains the role of Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces,” Mbadi stated.
In what appears to be a strategy for ensuring the law is adopted in parliament, Mbadi added that they were considering introducing a proposal where MPs will be allowed to serve for ten years.
“This is one of the reasons some of us propose that we come up with a new electoral system where the legislators serve for one term of ten years,” the ODM Chairman stated.
The proposed amendments to the constitution have been loudly opposed by Deputy President William Ruto who is seen as the front-runner in the 2022 presidential race.
