FRESH DETAILS: Miguna's Lawyer Reveals Details Of Sonko's Late Night Phone Call Before Nomination

Cliff Ombeta: Sonko called me at 8pm for a meeting at Serena

Miguna Miguna’s lawyer, Cliff Ombeta on Thursday revealed details of a night phone call from Governor Sonko and subsequent meeting which saw his client nominated as Nairobi Deputy Governor.

Mr Ombeta, who spoke to a local TV station Thursday morning, revealed that he got a call from Mr Sonko on Wednesday at around 8pm, urging him to urgently meet the governor at a Nairobi hotel.
“I was called by the governor of Nairobi, and he told me that he had an appointment to make and he needed my presence.
“So I went, it was approximately 8pm last night; I went to Serena and he told me straight away what his intentions were. Straight away the letter was made, I was handed a copy, and I sent the copy to the client and the other legal team,” Mr Ombeta said via phone.
He further exuded confidence in his client, whom he alluded that could easily work with the governor, despite the verbal spat the two [Sonko and Miguna] had during the 2017 gubernatorial campaigns.

“We have sent the letter to our client, but he has not responded. I know he is a man who has no issues, and he can work with the governor, but that now awaits his own confirmation.
“He equally has the right to accept or reject, we can’t really force him to do anything, but we have offered our legal counsel to him,” he added.

Meanwhile, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has cast doubts on the possibility of having the fiery lawyer as the Nairobi Governor. In a tweet Thursday morning, the first time senator maintained that Nairobi won’t be led by Miguna Miguna as the Deputy Governor.
“Miguna will not become the Deputy Governor of Nairobi. Take that to the bank,” Sakaja tweeted.

Early Thursday, Nairobi County Speaker Beatrice Elachi confirmed receipt of a letter form Governor Sonko which was instructing her to initiate the process of vetting the nominee for the seat, which fell vacant after the resignation of Polycarp Igathe on January 30.

“I hereby forward my nominee, Lawyer Miguna Miguna to undergo full vetting process and approval by the County Assembly for the position of Deputy Governor,” reads part of the letter.
It adds: “The nominee meets all the requirements provided for in the Constitution, the Leadership and Integrity Act, the Elections Act and County Government Act.”
