Information reaching us from the ground indicated the prisoners made their daring escape while on prison duty in the farm.
According to the Deputy Regional Commander Jacob Mtevesi, it remains unclear how the inmates were able to pull off the escape in broad daylight under heavy security.
“We received information from the prison head in Malindi that two prisoners had escaped mysteriously as they were taking their working duties in the farms,” said Mtevesi.
“I am also shocked how the two managed to escape from the tight security that was guarding them in the daylight, it’s still not clear to me,” he added.
The prisoners have been identified as Jacob Tembo Deche from Kaloleni who was serving 15 years and Karisa Kahindi Katanan who had a 10 year prison sentence.

Further reports indicate the inmates had nearly done their time and they were expected to be released soon prior to their escape.
Mutevesi in his statement declared the individuals dangerous elements as they had been initially handed hefty sentences for serious crimes.
He further called on the public to offer any information that could lead to the arrest of the two suspects.
“As we carry out our investigations, we want to call upon the public coming across this information to assist us with any information of the whereabouts of these two prisoners, they are a threat to the community,” he said.

We also got a hold of a text message from the escaped prisoners explaining their motive for choosing the ‘highway’ rather than serving their full sentence.
If the information in the text is anything to go by, the prisoners were aggrieved by ill-treatment from officers at the Malindi GK Prison.
Officers reportedly turned brutal once they found out damaging information about them was out in the public.
