The announcement of Uhuru Kenyatta as president of Kenya in the concluded general election by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has had mixed reaction across the country. Uhuru was declared winner on Friday night, August 11 at Bomas of Kenya with the National Super Alliance (NASA) led by Raila Odinga protesting the results.
The news of Uhuru's victory was welcomed with joy and celebration in Central, Nairobi and Rift Valley with supporters singing and dancing throughout the night.
In parts of Nairobi and Nyanza, which are regarded as NASA strongholds, the announcement was welcomed with anger and protests.
In Kondele, Kisumu five people were shot and injured by the police after protests turned ugly. Youths in Kisumu engaged police in running battles as some blocked roads with stones and bonfires forcing police to use teargas to disperse them. In Migori, NASA supporters engaged police in running battles in Shauri Yako slums, Sofia and Makongeni estates.
In Nairobi's Mathare slum, several people were reported injured after angry youths battled police though the night. TUKO.co.ke has learnt that in Kibera protests turned ugly when youths stoned police who responded with teargas which led to screams and shouts from scared residents in the slum.
In Nairobi’s Buruburu and Kiambiu estates, police lobbed teargas to disperse two rival groups, one celebrating Uhuru's victory and the other protesting the announcement.
