We reliably learnt
that Murang'a Senator Irungu Kang'ata said Raila committed no crime in being
sworn in as the people's president. Kang'ata was quoted saying that if Raila
had broken the law, he would have already been arrested by now for the
controversial ceremony that took place on Tuesday, January 30, in front of
thousands of supporters.
According to a report by the Standard on Tuesday, February
6, Kang'ata clarified that Raila did not take the oath as the President of the
Republic of Kenya, but as the people's president.
"Raila did not commit any crime. If he had violated the
law, he would have been arrested. He did not take the oath as the President of
the Republic. There are many presidents in this country such as university
student leaders," said Kang'ata.
Also speaking on the
arrests of opposition legislators following Raila's swearing in, Kang'ata said
this was happening because they uttered inciting statements.
"The arrests of NASA leaders were effected because of
their inciting statements. People are being arrested because they are
misleading Raila and making inciting utterances," added Kang'ata.
According to prior The Evening Post reports, following the swearing in, Ruaraka
Member of Parliament TJ Kajwang, lawyer Miguna Miguna and Makadara MP George
Aladwa were arrested. Kajwang was arrested on Wednesday, January 31, outside
the Milimani Law Courts for administering the oath of the office of the
president to Raila.
He was later released on bond. Controversial lawyer Miguna
Miguna was dramatically arrested at his Karen home on Friday, February 2, for
being the leader of the outlawed National Resistance Movement, a wing of the
National Super Alliance.
To date, despite a court order, the state refused to produce
him in court and is still in jail in Githunguri. It is also believed that his
role in administering the oath to Raila as well might have played a role in his
arrest. Aladwa was arrested on Saturday, February 3, at his Buruburu home on
suspicion of being the mastermind behind a grenade attack on NASA co-leader
Kalonzo Musyoka's Karen home and inciting Kibra residents to violence following
Miguna's arrest. He was released on bond.
