Embakasi East legislator Babu Owino has denied the assault
allegations leveled against him.
According to the controversial MP, the
allegations are an attempt by his political enemies to taint his image.
This he said would ultimately influence the mind of the
Judge in his election petition case.
While speaking during an interview with Hot 96 FM, the first
time MP said the main reason why he was arrested was because of the petition.
“The main reason why I was arrested is because of my
petition in court. One of the prayers of the petitioner was that my election be
nullified on the grounds that on the Election Day there was violence. They
produced a video as evidence… I was not seen in that video, so they know that
their case is too weak. They want to influence the mind of the Judge, to
believe that indeed Babu is a violent man,” explained Babu Owino.
Babu was arrested last Friday afternoon following
accusations of assaulting a parking attendant at an entertainment joint in
Westlands, Nairobi on January 11.
It is alleged that the Babu and his bodyguard assaulted one
David Gichagu Wagana, a parking attendant at Fortis Towers compound in
Westlands.
But in his defense, Babu, in the interview, claimed that he
was in Mombasa at the time of the incident. He also claimed that the car in the
viral video does not belong to him.
“You can search that car, they said it is a KBZ… my V8 is a
KCE,” said Babu.
The MP and his bodyguard Fanuel Owino were on Monday
arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts and charged with assault, causing bodily
harm and using abusive language.
Appearing before Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi, the two
pleaded not guilty and were freed on a personal bond of Sh20,000 each.
