Alarm As 30 Supermarket Employees Are Caught Red-Handed Repackaging Dangerous Sugar

30 supermarket employees caught red-handed repackaging poisonous sugar in Nyandarua

Yet another consignment of what is believed to be poisonous sugar has been impounded amid intense crackdown on illegal and counterfeit goods.

Unspecified number of bags of sugar labeled "Not for Sale. For industrial use only" was found in a warehouse in Ol Kalou town, Nyandarua County, and with some 30 employees of Jamaa supermarket busy repackaging the sugar.

Reports seen by TUKO.co.ke on Monday, June 18, indicated the illegal consignment was discovered following an afternoon raid on Sunday by detectives who swung into action upon receiving a tip-off.
Confirming the raid, Central Regional CID Danson Nduri said they caught the Jamaa supermarket employees red-handed repackaging the sugar in branded plastic bags.
"And since the bags were clearly marked 'For industrial use only', we were had not choice but to shut down the warehouse," Nduri said.

Preliminary investigation revealed the sugar was shipped from Brazil and India and secretly transported into the warehouse in Ol Kalou town on the night of Saturday, June 16.
The issue of poisonous sugar allegedly being supplied to the local supermarkets has raised a lot of concern among Kenyans.

A damning report by the Interior CS Fred Matiang'i revealed part of 1,030 bags of contraband impounded in Easleigh, Nairobi, were contaminated with toxic elements.
Matiang'i later confirmed a laboratory test by the government chemist revealed some of the sugar contained Copper and Mercury.

The CS assured the investigators of full support from President Uhuru Kenyatta in the fight against illegal sugar.

He sent stern warning to those involved in the illegal trade, some of whom are said to be powerful politicians.

"When you are selling poison to Kenyans purporting to be sugar, and you are making money out of it, you are committing murder on a mass scale," Matiang'i warned.
