Orengo spotted in Russia as MPs blow Sh50 million to watch World Cup

Siaya Senator James Orengo is among 20 Members of Parliament who have travelled to Russia to enjoy the ongoing World Cup extravanganza.

Orengo was spotted in the company of Jubilee Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga as they enjoyed Croatia’s match against England at the World Cup semi-finals held in Moscow.
This as it emerged that the Kenyan taxpayer would pay at least Sh50 million for MPs and senators to enjoy the world cup and learn “how to host such international tournaments”.
It is not clear if Orengo and Omanga are there in their individual capacities or as senators – given that they are not members of the relevant committees representing parliament in Russia.

A spot check by Pulselive.co.ke established that an economy air tickets from Nairobi to Moscow is retailing at an average of Sh200, 000 owing to the high demand caused by the Wold Cup sensation.
Once in Russia, each MP is estimated to spend at least Sh250, 000 for the match tickets. Some of the MPs travelled early enough for the quarter finals while others are yet to make their way – perhaps preparing for the thrill of the finals to be held on Sunday.
Assuming that each legislator attended an average of four matches, the total cost for stadium tickets alone is Sh1 million per MP.
The cost of accommodation in Moscow has also escalated as fans across the world scramble for a chance to experience the World Cup.
If each of the MPs spend an average of 12 nights in Russia, at a 3-Star hotel charging Sh50, 000 a night, then the cost of accommodation rises to about Sh600, 000 per legislator.

Since the MPs are on official duty, they will also be entitled to per diem, in addition to their hefty salaries.
Salaries and Remuneration Commission guidelines offers members of parliament Sh86, 200 daily allowance while on international trips.
while Croatia vs England match was played about 700 kilometres away in Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium.
The total cost comes to around Sh2.8 million for every MP. With 20 MPs, that’s around Sh50 million for the entire trip.
Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye, however, defended the trip saying it was not a joyriding session but a serious affair that will allow MPs to understand how international football events are held.
