A group of youth on Tuesday blocked the road that links
Kenya to Tanzania in Migori demanding the immediate release of National
Resistance Movement's (NRM) self-proclaimed general Miguna Miguna.
The rowdy youth barricaded the road with stones and burnt
tires protesting impunity by police. It is alleged that they also threatened to
burn down police stations if Miguna is not released.
Miguna was arrested on Friday last week at his Runda
home but his whereabouts have remained unclear.
Inspector-General of Police, Joseph Boinnet, and
the Director of Criminal Investigations, George Kinoti, were ordered to
appear in court today (Tuesday) to explain circumstances surrounding their
failure to release the lawyer.
High Court judge Luka Kimaru gave the order on Monday when a
group of more than 10 lawyers appeared before him to protest failure by the
State to release their colleague, who was granted bail on Friday but was still
locked up.
Over the weekend, lawyer Edwin Sifuna stated that Miguna
suffered an asthma attack at Lari police station and he was denied
medication.
“It’s true. We received information that Miguna has suffered
an Asthma attack. I have with me an inhaler but the OCS has become hostile.
He won’t let me see my client to give him the medication,”
stated Sifuna.
A team of lawyers led by Otiende Amollo also demanded to see
Miguna 'whether dead or alive.'
Similar protests are said to have been held in some parts of
Kisumu as the residents protested the lawyer's arrest.
